As the warm breeze of July filled the air and flowers bloomed in full color, we gathered in a sun-drenched backyard oasis to honor my mother and the women who shaped our stories. In My Mother’s Garden wasn’t just a backyard soirée—it was a soul-nourishing celebration of legacy, love, and the generational strength of women.

A Garden Party Rooted in Love
Back in 2022 my mother celebrated a milestone birthday, but the world had other plans for our celebration. My mother loves to garden. Out of the MANY hobbies that she enjoys (She's on a knitting kick right now), gardening has been her true passion. So I always wanted to create a garden-themed party to celebrate her. So the opportunity came up last year for me to create this event, and the perfect venue was right in out backyard.
In My Mother's Garden.
Set against the backdrop of lush greenery and carefully curated blooms, the event brought together friends and family to pay homage to my mother and her "mothers": grandmothers, aunties, and “village” mothers—those women who held us, taught us, and lifted us up. Every detail, from the soft linens to the tablescaping, echoed the nurturing spirit we came to honor.

A Tribute to the Women Who Made Us
Mother’s Day often centers on individual relationships, but In My Mother’s Garden expanded that love to honor the collective impact of women who’ve shaped generations. We shared stories, shed tears, and laughed over shared memories.
No detail was spared that connected the generations of love that filled the space. The color palette was intentional; not only using my mother's and my favorite colors (Pink and Blue) but also using the favorite colors of the women who shaped our journey:
Green for my grandmother; Gladys Weatherly
Yellow for my other grandmother; Earltee Davis
Yellow for my great aunt; Elizabeth Yarbrough
Purple for my church grandmother; Christine Hedgley
I used the china sets from my mother and grandmother as part of the decor, leveraging everything from the serving plates to the teapots to create a truly memorable experience. I used the teacups as mini floral arrangements and the larger china as apart of the food/dessert presentation as well.
And finally I created a memorial table as a tribute to the women who were apart of our story, not only the women mentioned above, but also the following roses in God's garden:
Patricia Conway - One of my mother's best friends and nursing buddies.
Erma Birdsong- Another bonus mother who went to be with the Lord a week before this event
Ginger Weatherly - Our fur baby (My fur auntie) - She was my grandmother's cat that we kept starting in 2019.

Food, Fellowship, and Floral Beauty
Guests enjoyed a seasonal menu filled with comforting, garden-inspired dishes—from fresh herb salads to sweet floral teas, and a Watermelon punch that was true delight. The scent of mint and citronella mingled with music from a curated playlist, creating an atmosphere of ease and connection. Floral dresses and garden hats dotted the scene, turning our backyard into a living tribute to joy, resilience, and elegance.

A Visual Love Letter
The event was designed to be not only meaningful but visually immersive. Every element—from signage to photos of mothers past and present—was chosen to honor the sacred work of mothering in all its forms. It was a reminder that beauty and memory are deeply intertwined. From the invitations to the custom cookies, every detail tied together to tell a beautiful celebration with story.

Why In My Mother’s Garden Matters
In a world that moves fast, taking time to pause, reflect, and honor our roots is revolutionary. In My Mother’s Garden was more than a backyard party; it was a spiritual exhale—a way to reclaim space for rest, remembrance, and recognition. By honoring our mothers and mother-figures, we connect more deeply to ourselves and to each other.
